Overcoming Barriers: What Doors Are You Closing?
Have you ever felt stuck in a situation you couldn’t change, only to realize later that the power to shift it was within you all along? That’s exactly what one of my clients discovered. She reached out as a last resort, frustrated by an ongoing conflict with her neighbor. Her neighbor frequently slammed their door, and every time she heard it, her stomach would tighten, and she’d feel anxious. Over time, this small annoyance grew into a significant disruption—impacting her peace of mind, her happiness, and even making her consider leaving the home she loved for the last 25 years.
This situation had escalated to the point where she reached out for help from security and the police, but nothing changed. Feeling out of options, she booked a session with me. In just one hour, we worked on transforming her inner reaction to the situation. After all, she couldn’t control her neighbor, but she could control how she responded. By the end of the session, she was visibly more relaxed.
The next day, she sent me a surprising update: “Believe it or not, the door hasn’t been slammed! I can hear them going in and out, but they’re closing the door rather than letting it slam.” She then asked, “Is it possible that I’m just not reacting to it anymore?”
Her story reminded me of a personal experience with my grandmother, who passed away recently at the age of 99. Over the last few years, I found myself calling her less and less. Though I loved her deeply, I’d often feel anxious about our conversations. She worried about me so much that her words often projected fear and lack. To protect myself from those feelings, I chose to love her from a distance.
But now, I wonder: Did my avoidance “slam the door” on our relationship? If I had transformed my own perspective, like my client did, could I have perceived her worry as love and care instead of fear and negativity?
Are You Holding Yourself Back Without Realizing the barriers?
Maybe it’s a relationship, a dream, or a big goal you worked tirelessly toward but gave up on when things got tough. We all have those moments when we close doors, intentionally or not, to protect ourselves from discomfort or disappointment. But here’s the truth. When we change how we look at things, the things we look at change. This insight, often quoted by Wayne Dyer, holds profound wisdom within it.
Change begins within us. When we shift our perspective, we often find that the barriers we perceived weren’t as immovable as we thought. Doors we believed were closed permanently can swing open, revealing new opportunities and possibilities.
What Are the Hidden Costs of Staying Stuck?
For many professionals and business owners, self-doubt is one of the most common closed doors. Despite outward success, they find themselves stuck in patterns of overthinking, perfectionism, or focusing on the wrong tasks. These habits lead to frustration, missed opportunities, and an inability to tap into their potential.
This self-sabotage doesn’t just keep doors closed—it blinds us to the ones that are already open. How many opportunities have you walked past because fear or doubt held you back? How often have you settled for less because stepping through a new door felt too risky?
Steps to Shift Your Mindset and Find Opportunity
The good news is that transformation doesn’t have to take years. Sometimes, a single shift in perspective can change everything. My client’s story is proof that life can look different in just one hour. The same can be true for you for overcoming barriers.
If you find yourself:
- Overthinking decisions, causing delays in taking action.
- Feeling overwhelmed by the pressure of meeting your own high standards.
- Feeling disconnected from your goals, unsure if you’re chasing what truly matters.
Then it’s time to take a closer look at the doors you perceive as closed and lean into possibility.

Don't Let Another Year Pass You By
Like my client with the loud neighbor, we can spend years tolerating situations that leave us feeling stuck, frustrated, or unfulfilled. Or, like me with my grandmother, we can miss out on meaningful connections and opportunities because we’re afraid to face what’s uncomfortable and do things differently.
Time is the one commodity we can never get back. What becomes possible when you start looking inward and opening yourself to new perspectives? Doors that seemed permanently closed can open in an instant.
Your situation can change faster than you think. Sometimes, all it takes is the courage to look inside and take the first step.
Register for your complimentary seat in my workshop Self-Doubt to Self-Mastery: Goal Alignment Framework to Bridge the Gap, and let’s start opening those doors together!
